Insurance, FSA & HSA for Compounded Medications

Most compounded prescriptions are processed as cash-pay. We work with Kaiser Permanence commercial insurance plans when applicable and help guide reimbursement options.

Why Compounded Medications Are Often Cash-Based

Compounded medications are prepared specifically for each patient pursuant to a valid prescription. Because these prescriptions include customized ingredients and formulations, unique dosage forms and strengths, and individualized preparation processes, the insurance systems are not always structured to process these prescriptions, making cash-pay the most straightforward option in most cases.

This means payment and insurance coverage can work differently than traditional retail medications.

At Valor, most prescriptions are processed as cash-pay. We also support HSA and FSA payments and work with Kaiser Permanence commercial insurance plans when applicable.

Cash-Pay & Submitting for Reimbursement

The majority of compounded presciptions are filled on a cash-pay basis, with pricing shared before processing. Once paid, your compound is scheduled to be prepared in the lab for verification and dispensing. This approach reflects the customized nature of compounded medications.

If you would like to seek reimbursement through your insurance:

  • We can provide a universal claim form upon request
  • You may submit this form directly to your insurance carrier (or you may need to copy it to their required claim form)
  • Reimbursement, if any, is determined by your plan

Kaiser Permanente Commercial Insurance

Valor Compounding Pharmacy is an approved partner working with Kaiser Permanence commercial insurance plans in certain cases. Coverage depends on your specific Kaiser Permanente benefit plan. Not all compounded medications are eligible for reimbursement or coverage. Members of Kaiser Permanente can see that their custom prescription was prescribed by their provider in their member portal, MyChart.

We recommend confirming your benefits directly with Kaiser Permanence to understand your specific coverage. You may contact the phone number on the back of your benefits card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are compounded medications covered by insurance?

Depending on your insurance plan, you may be reimbursed by sending in a claim form. Some insurance companies cover compounded prescriptions, however many do not. We suggest that you contact your insurance company to learn about your specific coverage. You may request a universal insurance claim form upon checkout of your prescription order that you may send to your carrier.

Can I choose to not use insurance even if I have it?

Yes. We provide clear pricing before processing so you can make an informed decision.

Will I know the cost before filling my prescription?

Yes. When a prescription is transferred, the receiving pharmacy contacts the original pharmacy directly. Under pharmacy law, the original pharmacy must transfer a valid prescription upon request, and the original prescription record is then cancelled at the transferring location.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Yes, most compounded prescriptions are eligible for HSA and FSA payment.
